Canadian Michael Spavor left a Canadian Border Services Agency office in Calgary, Alberta on Saturday just hours after returning to the country for the first time since late 2018 when he and Michael Kovrig were detained in China.

The two men flew into Calgary earlier that day after boarding a plane in China the night prior. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced late Friday night when the plane had left Chinese airspace, informing reporters and the public that the men were "on their way home."

Spavor and Kovrig's plane home took off just hours after Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou saw her U.S. extradition request withdrawn and bail conditions released, allowing her to return home almost three years after she and then the Michaels were detained in 2018. China has often rejected claims that the two men were detained in connection to Meng's arrest, though experts including a former foreign minister of Canada said the timeline made it "difficult to believe."
