The United States has the highest maternal mortality rate among developed countries despite spending significantly more on health care. There are too few maternity care providers, especially midwives, and a lack of access to comprehensive postpartum support. One organization is trying to change that by providing doulas to support women during labor and birth, along with prenatal and postpartum visits.
