Manitoba officials provided an update on the province’s efforts fighting wildfires Monday, as residents of Cranberry Portage, Man., anxiously awaited word about the fates of their homes as a massive wildfire quickly approaches the community.

As of Monday afternoon, fire WE010 near Flin Flon is approximately 31,600 hectares based on updated mapping and continues to impact the cottage subdivisions of Sourdough Bay, Whitefish Lake, Twin Lakes, Schist Lake North and Cranberry Portage, according to a provincial statement.

The fire is approximately 1.5 kilometres away from Cranberry Portage and the community has now been evacuated to The Pas. Approximately 550 residents are affected at this time but that number may increase as conditions change.

“Somebody asked earlier about how long it's going to take. We could be fighting that fire a month from now, so it's going to be a lot of work to put out that fire. So we're going to do the best we can,” Manitoba Wildfire Service acting director Earl Simmons said.
