On Sunday, the community of Carman, Man., was shaken when police cars and forensic trucks gathered outside a neighbourhood home. The discovery at the home in Carman was just one piece of a tragic puzzle investigators began unpacking.
The bodies of five people, including three children, were discovered at three different locations in southern Manitoba. Initially, police responded to reports of a woman's body found in a ditch outside town. Officers later found the children's remains at a nearby rural municipality following reports of a burning vehicle, as well as the body of a 17-year-old at a home inside Carman.
Manitoba investigators say all five deaths are connected and have charged Ryan Howard Manoakeesick, 29, with five counts of first-degree murder.
Carman United Church Rev. Harold Kenyon said, "I think people are just... were shocked. You know, someone remarked that we all feel like zombies today. It's a terrible, terrible loss in our town. I just have been in ministry for a long time. I've never encountered anything like this." Rev. Kenyon added that the clergy is working to support the community and first responders, and that the church is a sanctuary for anyone who needs support.
