A man has been shot and wounded at a protest in New Mexico over the erection of a Spanish conquistador statue.

Video of the incident showed an individual pulling out a weapon and opening fire.

Protesters had gathered at a ceremony to install a statue of Spanish conquistador Juan de Oñate when the incident happened.

The motive behind the shooting is unclear and the victim is being treated in hospital, according to officials.
