Sparrows understand that you can’t just keep blaring out the same tune and expect the ladies to come flocking. That’s why male song sparrows carefully curate their own ‘playlists’ of songs, and keep them on shuffle to avoid looking like a drunken bore at a party.

Researchers have been studying song sparrows in Pennsylvania, and have found that the males keep track of their repertoire for up to 30 minutes at a time, performing roughly a dozen different songs. Not only that, but they also deliberately leave certain songs until the end to build ‘hype.’ It’s thought that the females are more likely to stick around for a male with a varied playlist, and the team’s next study will aim to confirm this with breeding data.

In the meantime, can these sparrows give some pointers to the person responsible for Baby Shark?
