"One of the nation’s most closely watched House races, the battle to represent California’s 47th congressional district, isn’t likely to be decided for at least a few days.

The first vote counts released Tuesday, Nov. 8, show incumbent Rep. Katie Porter, D-Irvine, with a slim but clear lead over challenger Scott Baugh, a Republican from Huntington Beach. The margin is close enough that either candidate could pull ahead as more votes are counted.

In recent elections ballots tallied after the end of voting have swung in favor of both parties. In the 2018 midterm, when Porter won her current seat, CA-45, Democrats gained about 5 percentage points as mail-in and walk-up ballots were counted after the last day of voting. But in 2020, when the pandemic prompted more mail-in voting and former President Donald Trump urged his backers to vote in person, later ballot counts broke in favor of Republicans."
