The man believed to have shot Slovakia's prime minister is thought to have acted alone.

The country's interior minister said the 71-year-old was not a member of any political party but had taken part in anti-government activities.

Robert Fico is in intensive care and "fighting for his life" after being shot multiple times in the apparent assassination attempt.

The suspect, who has not been named, has been charged with attempted murder.
