U.S. Republican Rep. Liz Cheney lost her party's Wyoming primary election on Tuesday night, ensuring she would not see another term in the House of Representatives in what was seen as a rebuke by supporters of former president Donald Trump for her vote to impeach him over the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

"I have said since January 6 (2021) that I will do whatever it takes to ensure Donald Trump is never again anywhere near the Oval Office and I mean it, this is a fight for all of us," she told supporters during her concession speech.

Cheney conceded the race to Harriet Hageman after the former number three Republican in the House found herself trailing the Trump-backed challenger by about 30 points. She spoke about how she won the primary in 2020 with 73 per cent of the vote, and could have "easily" done the same again, but it would have required "that I go along with President Trump's lie about the 2020 election."

"No office in this land is more important than the principles that we are all sworn to protect," she said.

Cheney also spoke out about the lies she says have been put out by Trump, including most recently about the FBI raid of his Mar-a-Lago home, saying that Americans "cannot abandon the truth."
