The US House of Representatives is caught in a historic gridlock after its first day under Republican rule. Hard-right lawmakers blocked the election of a majority leader by refusing to vote for the frontrunner, which is usually a formality. Senior Republican Kevin McCarthy had been tipped for the post, but his previous criticism of former president Donald Trump moved hard-right lawmakers to back other candidates. It's the first time in a hundred years that the leadership vote has failed in the first round.
