Heavy rains in central Kenya killed at least 45 people and injured over 110 others on Monday, after floodwaters washed away houses and cars in the town of Mai Mahui. Drone footage showed the devastation left behind by the flooding, as the government fears the death toll could rise further.

Police initially blamed the flooding on a burst dam, however the Ministry of Water later said it was caused by a river tunnel under a railway embankment becoming blocked with debris.

“My wife abruptly woke up after she had a loud bang," flash flood survivor John Macharia said. "The raging water came from behind the house. It sounded like a bomb. Immediately, the water swept us away."

Monday’s deaths bring the country's death toll from heavy rains and flooding over the past month to more than 140. Causing widespread damage to roads and bridges in the area, the region was last hit by record floods in late 2023.
