Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the UAE and Egypt cut transport and trade links with Qatar in 2017, accusing it of ties with Iran and Islamist extremists. The nations demanded Qatar shut its Al-Jazeera news agency, end any joint military cooperation with Turkey and asked it to align itself militarily, politically, socially and economically with the other Gulf and Arab countries. So far Qatar hasn’t done any of these, except cease its lawsuits against the countries that blockaded it.

The end of the diplomatic crisis is seen as a foreign-policy achievement for Donald Trump whose son-in-law and advisor Jared Kushner flew to both Saudi Arabia and Qatar to negotiate the details and will be present when a deal is signed.
