People gathered at Sophia Square in Kyiv on Monday to see the lighting of the city’s Christmas tree, which was powered with generators amid Russia’s war in Ukraine.
“We decided that we will not give a chance to steal such a beautiful holiday as St. Nicholas Day from our children,” Said Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko.
The space in front of the centuries-old St. Sophia Cathedral is usually anchored by a large evergreen at Christmas but this year officials opted for a 12 metre artificial tree decorated with energy-saving lights powered by a generator.
The tree was lit as Russia hit energy infrastructure in and around Kyiv in a “kamikaze” drone attack on Monday.
