Kevin McCarthy makes 1st speech as US House Speaker: “It's not how you start, it's how you finish”

Republican Kevin McCarthy was finally elected U.S. House Speaker in a historic post-midnight 15th ballot early Saturday morning, after a chaotic week that tested the new GOP majority’s ability to govern.

After four days of grueling ballots, McCarthy began his speech to Congress with the quip: “It’s not how you start, it's how you finish.”

Electing a speaker is normally an easy task for a party that has just won majority control. But not this time: About 200 Republicans were stymied by 20 far-right colleagues who had claimed McCarthy was not Conservative enough.

After taking up the Speaker’s gavel, McCarthy said the first bill considered by the new Republican-led House of Representatives will be aimed at repealing funding for a Biden initiative to hire additional IRS agents over a 10-year period.
