On Feb. 24, 2020, a 17-year-old man — who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act — violently attacked two women in Toronto’s Crown Spa massage parlour, killing one and injuring the other.

Last September, the killer pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and attempted murder. He made his plea at Ontario Superior Court before Justice Suhail Akhtar, where court heard he had been thinking of carrying out his violent actions for months.

The charge of murder with the intent of terror was laid—a very unusual charge which has only been laid a handful of times in Canadian history.

On Tuesday, more than three years after the attack, and eight months after the killer was charged, the court heard arguments about whether his actions were an act of terror motivated by the incel ideology.

Global News' crime specialist Catherine McDonald reports.
