Lawyers presented closing arguments to the jury on Friday ahead of deliberations in the defamation trial between Johnny Depp and his ex-wife Amber Heard.

Depp is suing Heard for libel in Fairfax County Circuit Court over a December 2018 op-ed she wrote in the Washington Post describing herself as “a public figure representing domestic abuse.” His lawyers say he was defamed by the article even though it never mentioned him by name.

During closing arguments, Depp’s lawyer Camille Vasquez said Depp was “the real victim of domestic abuse and alleged that once Heard realized her relationship with the actor was ending she “inflicted the greatest and cruelest injury of all” by accusing him of domestic abuse and sexual violence.

Depp's lawyer Ben Chew argued that the actor did not deserve “to have his life, his legacy destroyed” by what he said were false accusations.

Amber Heard’s lawyer Ben Rottenborn, meanwhile, asked the jury to consider what message Depp’s legal team was sending to victims of domestic violence through his defamation suit against Heard.

“If you finally decide that enough is enough; you’ve had enough of the fear, enough of the pain and you have to leave to save yourself – you’re a gold digger. That is the message that Depp is asking you to say,” he argued.

Heard’s lawyer Elaine Bredehoft disputed Depp’s claims that Heard had perpetrated a hoax by coming forward with allegations of abuse, asking “what would Amber Heard’s motive be?”
