It may be "strange days indeed," but a small crowd gathered to celebrate the life and music of John Lennon in New York's Central Park on Tuesday, 40 years to the day after his assassination.

In spite of the ongoing pandemic, a steady stream of pedestrians passed through "Strawberry Fields," the area dedicated to Lennon, while a gathered few performed Lennon's classics. Marked with a permanent plaque that reads, "Imagine," Strawberry Fields is just steps away from "The Dakota" building in which Lennon lived with wife Yoko Ono and where he was gunned down in 1980.

The Beatles released Lennon's composition "Strawberry Fields Forever" in 1966.

For her part, Lennon's wife, as well as his son, former Beatles band-mates and fans were all paying tribute to one of the world's most revered singer-songwriters.

Those gathered in New York were mindful of Lennon's unique connection to the city as well as his message.
