After nearly 50 years in U.S. politics, Joseph R. Biden was sworn in on Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2021 as the 46th President of the United States on Capitol Hill, being sworn in by Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts.

Biden entered national politics in 1973 when he was sworn in as the junior senator from Delaware. At the time, he was the sixth-youngest senator in U.S. history, and served in various roles, including chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee. He ran for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1987, though later dropped out.

In 2008, following a competitive Democratic presidential primary, Biden dropped out of the race once again but later was named running mate for then Sen. Barack Obama and eventually became the 47th vice-president.

He ran again for the 2020 presidential nomination and after a highly-crowded field, came out as the nominee and on Nov. 7, was projected to be president-elect. His presidential win was certified by both houses of Congress.
