U.S. President-elect Joe Biden on Wednesday delivered a Thanksgiving address from Wilmington, Delaware, in which he sought unity and pleaded with Americans to take steps to remain safe as COVID-19 cases surge.
Biden urged people to forgo big family gatherings, wear protective masks and maintain social distancing, adding that his own family would be having separate Thanksgiving gatherings.
Since winning the Nov. 3 election, Biden has also offered a message of national healing and reconciliation, while President Donald Trump still refuses to concede and falsely claims the election was stolen.
"Our democracy was tested this year, and what we learned is this: the people of this nation are up to the task,” he said. “People of this nation and the laws of the land won't stand for anything else.”
Public health officials have urged Americans to stay at home for Thursday's holiday and avoid large gatherings. More than 260,000 Americans have died from COVID-19, with the daily toll on Tuesday surpassing 2,000 for the first time since May.
