The Jan. 6 committee voted on Thursday to issue a subpoena to former U.S. president Donald Trump to appear before lawmakers investigating last year’s attack on the U.S. Capitol, the most significant escalation yet for the panel. The 10th public session, likely to be the panel’s last public hearing before the November midterm elections, was delving into Trump’s “state of mind,” said Chairman Bennie Thompson.

The vote came at the end of a two-hour hearing where committee members laid out in vivid detail how the former president was “at the centre” of efforts to overturn the 2020 election. The House select committee's seven Democratic and two Republican members voted 9-0 in favor of issuing a subpoena to Trump to provide documents and testimony under oath in connection with the Jan. 6 attack.

The panel’s vice-chair, Republican Rep. Liz Cheney, said although the committee has sufficient evidence to recommend criminal charges against multiple people, “we need to hear from the central player.” She did not say if Trump was one of those people who could face charge recommendations.

The hearing also presented never-before-seen Secret Service messages that revealed the way extremist groups fought for Trump’s presidency, planning weeks before the attack to send a violent mob to D.C. “Their plan is literally to kill people,” read a tip that was sent to the Secret Service more than a week before the violence on Jan. 6.
