A major rescue operation is happening in the Mediterranean Sea, where the Italian coastguard is assisting two boats with 1,200 people on board.
One vessel carrying 400 people is adrift between Greece and Malta.
It has been reported that the boat, which left from Tobruk in Libya on Sunday, was abandoned by its captain.
The coastguard is also carrying out a rescue operation on another vessel with about 800 people, off the coast of Syracuse in Sicily.

Al Jazeera’s Sara Khairat reports.
