Israel strikes back with airstrikes after rocket attacks from militants

Before sunrise, rockets streaked across the sky in Israel on Friday, as Israeli officials said it struck targets belonging to the Palestinian militant group Hamas in southern Lebanon and Gaza.

The strikes came hours after dozens of rockets were fired from Lebanon into Israeli territory, an attack the Israeli military blamed on Palestinian militants. The barrage from Lebanon was the largest since a 2006 war between the two countries and raised fears of a wider regional escalation.

The strikes took place as tensions continued to simmer, days after Israeli police stormed the al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem and two Israeli sisters were killed in a shooting attack in the occupied West Bank, according to officials.
