The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) reconvened on Tuesday to discuss the Israel-Hamas conflict, including calls for a ceasefire and the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza as conflict continues in the region.
UN representative from Canada Bob Rae said “Oct. 7, 2023, is a day that will be forever emblazoned in our hearts. Young women and men, nursing babies, mothers, fathers, and grandparents all killed with a cruelty that knew no limits. They were killed for one reason: because they were Jews,"
Pakistan’s UN representative, Munir Akram, blasted Israel’s Gaza offensive. “These Israeli attacks on civilians, civilian objects, and infrastructure, the blockade of food, water and fuel, as well as the forced transfer of people from the occupied territory, are flagrant violations of international humanitarian law, and amount to war crimes,” Akram said.
Sedat Önal, UN representative for Turkey, addressed the alleged total number of child casualties suffered by Palestinian civilians by Israeli bombardments. “As of today, the Israeli military has killed more Palestinian children since Oct. 7, than it did in all other Israeli military offences on Gaza since 2006, combined. The number of children killed is fast approaching 2,000,” Önal said.
