Immigration Minister Marc Miller announced on Thursday that the federal government would be offering temporary visas for people in Gaza with Canadian relatives.

"I am announcing new temporary measures to support family members of Canadians and permanent residents from Gaza as well as Israelis and Palestinians already in Canada. First, we are making fee-exempt study permits or open work permits available for immediate family members of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident," Miller said.

Miller noted that the Canadian government cannot offer safe passage from the besieged Palestinian territory.

Residents in Gaza have been dealing with daily air and land strikes from Israeli Defence Forces in retaliation for Hamas' deadly attack in Israel on Oct. 7.
