The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) held a special session on Israel and Gaza on Friday, where a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire and provision of urgent humanitarian aid was discussed.
U.S. Representative Linda Greenfield-Thomas proposed an amendment to the resolution arguing it lacked two key words.
"It is outrageous that this resolution fails to name the perpetrators of the Oct. 7 terrorist attack. Hamas. Another keyword missing in this resolution is hostage. This resolution makes no mention of the innocent people – including many citizens of yours in this room," Greenfield-Thomas said.
"Many of you have citizens being held hostage by Hamas and other terrorist groups. This is the bare minimum that we would like to see in this resolution. We urge all member states to vote yes on this amendment. The General Assembly must send a clear message to the world – that we stand against all acts of terror," she added.
Meanwhile, Pakistan's representative Munir Akram stated that we are "witnessing a human tragedy of epic proportions unfold right in front of our eyes."
"Israel’s campaign of bombardment and airstrikes has now continued for 20 days and has now killed 7,000 helpless Palestinians. Half of them are children. And wounded 17,000 others. Entire families and neighbourhoods have been wiped out. The Palestinians are being bombed indiscriminately. Forty per cent of Gaza City has been destroyed and yet the Israeli onslaught continues," Akram stated.
