A spectacular airshow was the center-piece of festivities in honor of Israel's 75th Independence Day. Germany, and several other allies of Israel also took part in the flypast. But thousands also joined protests calling on the right-wing government to abandon its controversial plans to reform the judiciary.

DW correspondent Nina Haase spoke with Nils Schmid, the foreign policy spokesman for the Social Democrats in the German parliament about Germany's special relation with Israel.
