Scores of Iraqis took to the streets of the south-eastern city of Basra on Friday, to demand the region’s autonomy in a bid to create an independent administration.
Dozens gathered on the city’s roads with banners and flags demanding the area’s autonomy.
In a bid to revamp past efforts of independence and amid ongoing protests over the country’s governing policies, Basra’s Provincial Council voted in favour of holding a referendum and launching a campaign for the establishment of a federal state.
Despite Basra being Iraq’s main port and main oil producer, the region has no control over its revenues and it is the federal government’s capital, Baghdad, where all decisions are made.
