Almost 100 people are reportedly dead after a tourist ferry capsized in the Tigris river in the northern city of Mosul during Nowruz and Mother's Day celebrations on Thursday.
Officials said at least 93 people were killed while a further 60 remain missing.
The ferry was transporting people from the river bank to a small island called Umm al-Rabeein.
The Iraq Civil Defense believe the boat was overcrowded, running at twice the permitted capacity.
Images show the Iraqi army involved in a large-scale rescue operation, drawing upon helicopters and boats. Rescuers are reportedly facing difficulties due to the rapid waterflow and rising water levels.
Later, hundreds of relatives and friends gathered in the Al Salam hospital east of Mosul, to wait for news of their next of kin. Many of them were filmed crying upon being informed of the passing away of their relative or friend.
