Two-thousand Southern White Rhino will begin making their way back into the wild this year. It’s part of a major project being taken on by African Parks, a wildlife conservation agency. The rhinos were part of a private collection which was sold to the agency in 2023.

They will now be transported across the continent to various protection areas. The project is expected to help boost the overall population of rhino and ensure ecological balance in the areas they inhabit. South Africa reported a sharp increase in rhino poaching, with almost 500 animals killed last year. DW correspondent Dianne Hawker has more.

For more on this, we talk to DW’s Dianne Hawker who filed that report.

We also talk to Markus Hofmeyr. He's the Director of the Rhino Recovery Fund – a collaborative granting initiative created by the Wildlife Conservation Network.

And we talk to Johannes Vogel, Director of the Natural History Museum of Berlin.
