Indigenous leaders in Canada are disappointed in the federal government's lack of progress on its promise of “transformative change," one year after a Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMWIG) report was published.

It was meant as a national roadmap on how to end violence against Indigenous Women. But, advocates say not nearly enough has been done to stop what the report called “a genocide.”

Hilda Anderson-Pyrz, the chair of the National Family and Survivor’s Circle, denounced what she called a lack of progress and accountability. “This is a national shame and it is also dangerous,” Anderson-Pyrz said.

On Friday, the federal government released a progress report pointing to recent advances in promoting Indigenous rights. “Things aren’t moving fast enough, but they are moving forward, ” said Minister of Crown–Indigenous Relations Canada Marc Miller.
