At COP26, India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised to cut emissions to net-zero by 2070 - 20 years after countries are supposed to hit that target.
The government is pushing to expand its coal sector, saying that it needs more energy sources to meet its growing demands.
That push includes developing new coalfields in Jharkhand, where state officials are challenging New Delhi's plans to convert large tracts of its forest into open-cast mines.
