India became the latest country to report more than 100,000 new cases of COVID-19 in a single day on Monday, with one doctor urging people to practice coronavirus safety measures including wearing a mask when they go out and maintaining proper social distancing.
"Let's not blame the new strain for this," said Dr. Arvind Kumar, appearing to reference a new "double mutant" variant that has been reported in the country.
"It's our COVID(-19) behaviour which is responsible for this rise."
The country's daily infections have risen 12-fold since hitting a multi-month low in early February, when authorities eased most restrictions and people largely stopped wearing masks.
The country's Ministry of Health and Family Welfare says the "double mutant" variant has not been found in sufficient numbers to account for the increase, but the E484Q mutation can change parts of the coronavirus spike protein. The vaccines created have been designed to create antibodies that target the spike protein and there is worry if a mutation changes the shape of that spike, it could cause issues for vaccines as far as neutralizing the virus effectively. Scientists are trying to determine if this may be the case for the variant.
