At least two people were killed in India's remote northeastern Manipur state after an apparent firing incident on Thursday, sparking protests among locals, domestic media reported.

Armed military personnel used tear gas to disperse protesters, while later in the day demonstrators were seen showering flower petals on bodies of victims believed to have been killed in the shooting.

The incident resulting in the deaths happened in Haraothel village, where armed attackers from an ethnic group fired at villagers and security forces, said media reports. Police have yet to confirm who fired the shots, and the identities of the victims.

Manipur has experienced widespread violence since May 3, following protests by Indigenous communities sparked by resentment over economic benefits and quotas for government jobs and education reserved for Kukis, an ethnic group, who mostly live in the hills.
