White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki held the first press briefing of the Joe Biden administration on Wednesday, just over six hours after the inauguration of the 46th president. Psaki started the briefing stressing that she would work to "rebuild trust" in both the press briefings as well as in the White House in the coming months in her role, stating while they may disagree at times in the room with how she and reporters may see things, she is hoping to bring truth and transparency back.
Psaki said that Biden's first foreign leader call would be with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and she expects the former's revoking of the permit for the Keystone XL pipeline will be a top issue of discussion given its impact to Canada.
In discussing plans surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, Psaki said Biden would like to come up with a bipartisan COVID-19 relief bill, and that he would be very involved in terms of working with senators to come to a deal, but said they would not take any "tools off the table" in order to get relief for the American public.
She also addressed concerns about how impeachment would impact his goal of bringing unity to the U.S, stating that the president was "confident" the Senate could multitask and both get things done for the American public through the passage of bills and confirmation of cabinet nominees, while also handling the impeachment trial of former president Donald Trump. Asked why Biden would not ask for impeachment to be dropped given it could be seen as divisive, Biden said he would leave the mechanics and timing of impeachment to the Senate.
Psaki, the 34th white house press secretary, worked as a spokesperson for the Department of State and held various press and communications roles in the Obama administration.
