Canadian Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland spoke to the media Wednesday for the first time since she was verbally attacked during her visit to Alberta last week.

"I'm really proud of my Alberta roots," Freeland said, adding that she did not think that this one "unpleasant incident" represents the welcome she has received since coming to Alberta.

Freeland mainly spoke about the importance of reliable supply chains after visiting a transport facility in Calgary earlier in the day, and meeting with workers.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) is now looking into the verbal harassment incident and says the force "takes threats against public officials very seriously."

In a statement posted on her Twitter account, Freeland said "nobody, anywhere, should have to put up with threats and intimidation."
