The International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor's office said on Monday that it has requested arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his defence chief, as well as for three Hamas leaders, for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity.

"I have reasonable grounds to believe, on the basis of evidence collected and examined by my office, that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Minister of Defence Yoav Gallant bear criminal responsibility for the following international crimes committed,” ICC prosecutor Karim Khan said. “The crimes include starvation of civilians as a method of warfare, willfully causing great suffering, serious injury to body or health, or cruel treatment, willful killing or murder and intentionally directing attacks against a civilian population.”

Prime Minister Netanyahu criticized the decision of the ICC prosecutor as absurd and said that the move was meant to target all of Israel. "I reject with disgust the comparison of the prosecutor in the Hague between democratic Israel and the mass murderers of Hamas," Netanyahu said. "This is a complete distortion of reality."

Tel Aviv residents also expressed dismay at the news, while Gazans said that the ICC warrant to arrest three Hamas leaders “turned the victim into the executioner." Displaced Palestinian Mohamed Abdel Al in Nuseirat asked, "So if someone comes into my house, am I not to defend myself?"
