Ilene Lawson is speaking out after she fell victim to fraudsters who convinced her that her granddaughter was in danger and needed her financial help.

“I was freaking out, literally freaking out, shaky and nervous,” Lawson told Global News in an interview at her home.

She said a man contacted her on her landline, and said her granddaughter was in custody and facing legal jeopardy after she was in a car accident and police found a loaded gun in her trunk. The man said she would be released if Lawson paid a $10,000 bond. But he said she couldn’t tell anyone for 72 hours.

The story was a complete lie and fortunately, Lawson was able to get her money back.

Our Seán O'Shea has more on the grandparent scam and Lawson's message to other seniors.
