The top portion of a construction crane caught fire and collapsed in Manhattan on Wednesday, injuring at least six people and snarling traffic during the morning rush hour, authorities and local media said. Firefighters and rescue personnel responded to the scene, blocking traffic in the surrounding streets and through the Lincoln Tunnel to New Jersey during rush hour.

The crane collapsed at about 7:30 a.m. in the area of 10th and 11th Avenues and West 41 and 42 Street, near the Hudson Yards complex, according to the Fire Department of New York’s first deputy commissioner Joseph Pfeifer. The New York City Police Department (NYPD) urged people to avoid the area.

“I was thinking that it was some kind of earthquake,” said hotel employee Irakli Klarje, who was near the area. “I see the huge flames coming out on the top of the crane. And then I look down on the street and I see the part that lifts the heavy lifting for the construction that crashed into the street.”

The top of the crane fell as it was lifting a 16-ton load of concrete, showering glass and debris from the damaged building into the street, fire officials said. New York City mayor Eric Adams assured that “this could have been much worse” and that the injuries could have been more severe.
