With smoke once again invading Edmonton with a blanket of haze, forcing Canadians indoors for physical health, there can be implications on one’s mental well-being as well. This summer has been plagued by smoke, resulting in the cancellation of outdoor events, frustrating Canadians hoping to take advantage of the warm weather.
Registered psychologist Dr. Angela Grace says diminished air quality and the cancellation of plans and outdoor activities can be both frustrating and isolating. She says people are worrying about their respiratory health, about not being able to enjoy summer the way we'd like to, and about the environmental impacts of the fires and climate change.
Grace encourages people to be flexible, and have backup plans to avoid disappointment. The doctor also says we can apply lessons learned from the pandemic to the smoke. While you might be indoors, connection to other people is still vital for your mental health — whether it be phone calls, virtual chats or in-person visits.
