Ukraine's president Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the situation in Russia was a sign of chaos and shows no one is in control. His army meanwhile says it has launched a new offensive in several areas of the country's east - and made gains in the eastern Donetsk region and around Bakhmut. At the same time the offensive in the south was still going on.
Russia's neighbors have taken to Twitter in response to the situation - mostly to say they are closely monitoring developments.
Latvia's Prime Minister said that border security had been ramped up and that no more Russians would be allowed into the country.
Lithuania's president said the Kremlin was reaping what it had sown and that we must prepare for any scenario.
European Council President Charles Michel tweeted that while this was an internal Russian issue, EU support for Ukraine was unwavering.
And the US is closely monitoring the situation.
