China has been staging a massive military parade to mark 70 years of communist rule. The celebration commemorates the founding of the People's Republic of China by Chairman Mao in 1949, an event that ended a bitter civil war that claimed millions of lives. President Xi Jinping said China's development would be peaceful, but that its military would safeguard its sovereignty and security. Conversely, there are no big celebrations in Hong Kong today, where once more thousands took to the streets to protest for democratic change.
