A cargo plane crashed off the coast of Hawaii early Friday morning, a state official confirmed. According to reports, the two pilots told air traffic controllers that their engine had cut out, with the second also having issues, and they needed help moments before crashing into the Pacific Ocean.

U.S. Coast Guard officials Lt. Alex Mead and Lt. Gleb Borovok detailed the rescue in an interview Friday, saying through night vision goggles they were able to detect different kinds of oil differences on the water and found an oil slick, giving them the approximate location of the Boeing 737 airplane.

They said they found one man waving his hand from the tail of the plane, while another was floating on a bed of cargo. Later Friday, officials said one pilot was in critical condition, with the second in serious condition. Both had been transported to hospital following their rescue.
