Mauna Loa in Hawaii, the world’s largest active volcano, erupted on Sunday evening for the first time in 38 years.
The U.S. Geological Service (USGS) said lava flows were contained to the summit and did not threaten any downslope communities. No mandatory evacuations have been ordered but shelters have been stood up to help those who leave voluntarily.
Authorities urged residents to remain vigilant and be prepared to leave quickly if necessary.
Mauna Loa last erupted in March and April of 1984, which sent a lava flow within eight kilometres of the city of Hilo.
