Sikhs on the streets of their holy city Amritsar said on Wednesday they want clarity following the murder of a Sikh separatist leader in Canada and claims India may have sanctioned the killing.

Tension has grown since Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Monday Canada was investigating "credible allegations" about the potential involvement of Indian government agents in the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia in June.

Speaking on the streets of Amritsar, near the Golden Temple which is at the heart of their faith, Sikh community member Harkirat Singh said he hopes for clarity on the allegations surrounding the killing in the near future.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government has categorically rejected Canada's suspicions that Indian agents had links to the murder.
