Police clashed with demonstrators during violent protests in Thessaloniki on Wednesday, marking the anniversary of teenager Alexis Grigoropoulos’ death after his murder by two police officers in 2008.
Protesters threw Molotov cocktails and firecrackers at the police, who responded with tear gas.
Alexis Grigoropoulos was 15 years old when he was killed in 2008 by two police officers who were involved in an argument with a group of teenagers in central Athens' Exarcheia district. The officers were found guilty of murder and of acting as an accomplice respectively.
Grigoropoulos’ death resulted in large protests throughout Greece, and solidarity demonstrations around the world. The death of the teen is marked every year in several cities across Greece, often resulting in violent clashes.
