Government spending £7m a day housing asylum seekers

The cost of the UK's asylum system has topped £2bn per year, a number which could continue to rise.

The Home Office has said the influx of people arriving on UK shores is "50 - 50 an asylum problem and an illegal migration problem".

The Home Affairs Committee was told that while some will claim asylum or may be victims of modern slavery, others are "deliberately gaming the system" - and will disappear into the UK on arrival.
