Rotorua is well-known as a jewel in our tourism crown – and then Covid hit. The city’s famous gateway, the motels of Fenton St, turned into emergency housing, resulting in many locals being at their wits’ end.
Gangs, drugs, fires - Rotorua, they say, has become dangerous for both longtime residents as well as those living in the motels.
SUNDAY goes undercover to examine life on Fenton Street - exorbitant motel prices and allegations of intimidation, sexual misconduct and abuse of power against the largest emergency housing provider and its affiliated security company.
In our investigation this week, we speak to whistleblowers and locals, and ask, who’s actually benefiting from all this?
