German Defence Minister Christine Lambrecht resigned on Monday amid ongoing pressure on the country to permit the supply of tanks to Ukraine as the war there with Russia continues.

Lambrecht has faced criticism for failing to get the German armed forces, known as the Bundeswehr, back into action, despite a €100 billion special fund being agreed for that purpose after Russia invaded Ukraine. Her resignation also deals a blow to Chancellor Olaf Scholz at a time when Germany has been urged to approve an increase in international military support to Kyiv.

British Defence Minister Ben Wallace was the latest to call on Germany permit the supply of Leopard tanks, stressing it could unlock support from other nations and Berlin would not be acting alone if it supplied its own.
