EU countries have decided on a planned military deployment to secure merchant shipping in the to protect merchant shipping in the Red Sea. The basic plan for the EU military operation is to send European warships to the region to protect cargo ships. The warships will protect merchant vessels from attacks by the Islamist Houthi militia from Yemen. The militia wants to force an end to Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip in response to the unprecedented massacre carried out by the Islamist Hamas in Israel on 7 October.
In view of the dangers, major shipping companies are increasingly avoiding the route between Asia and Europe through the Red Sea and Suez Canal. This is now having a significant impact on the global economy.
