U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson spoke out on Monday about the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minn., saying that while it happened “thousands of miles away,” governments around the world cannot ignore the “depth of emotion” that Floyd’s death has awakened in people around the world.

Johnson added that the U.K. has made “great strides” when it comes to defeating racism, but acknowledged that there is much more to do when it comes to creating opportunities for Black and minority communities.

The prime minister also called on residents to continue to respect COVID-19 restrictions, stating that Black and minority communities “have been at the forefront of the struggle” against the novel coronavirus.

Johnson also said he would not support those who break the law, attack police or desecrate public monuments.
